Modelling wooden bodied tank wagons

Wooden bodied tanks, and tanks contained in an outer wooden shell, were more common than you might imagine these were used for low-value corrosive cargo such as tars and also for chemicals that would attack metal such as iron chloride.

The information is presented as a set of pictures, these will take a while to download, to save any one of these right click on the required picture and select 'save picture as'. The pictures can then easily be printed for reference.

This tank wagon carried compressed chlorine gas in a pressurised tank inside the wooden body. Chlorine is very dangerous stuff (it was used in World War One as a war gas), the wooden tank was intended to capture any leakage to protect railway staff. The post war type, lacking the wooden outer body, is discussed in Section K. I was not able to confirm the livery for this wagon so my model has been sold to a gas works, the filling dome inside the hatch has been replaced with a liquid rather than compressed gas type and it is used to carry naphtha.
